1.Description: This historic Forest Service lookout is on Little Mt. Hoffman, a volcanic cinder cone in the Medicine Lake Highlands. It is in the Cascade Mountains Province. The Little Mt. Hoffman lookout was built circa 1931. It is a 14 by 14 foot wooden cab that sits on the ground with a wooden deck surrounding it and front steps. At 7,000 feet, the view is magnificient, especially towards the west where Mt. Shasta dominates the background and the the Little Glass Mountain lava flow is in the foreground. (see 1.6-F Directions).

2.Access Conditions: Roads to the lookout are mostly paved. The last 4 miles past Medicine Lake are not paved and motor homes and vehicles pulling trailers are not recommended. Travel time is approximately 1 1/2 hours from McCloud. Just before the top of the cinder cone and the lookout is a locked gate. This lookout rental has a key lock. Renter must obtain key from the McCloud Ranger Station during regular hours, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or calling (530) 964-2184, one week prior to arrival.

3.Facilities: The lookout has no cooking facilities and no water or electricity. There is a separate vault toilet building. There are two twin beds with mattresses in the lookout cabin. No linens or bedding is provided. There are cabinets for storage and a table for eating. You will need to supply your own water, dishes, utensils, cookware and heat. Please bring garbage bags, facility is "Pack it in, Pack it out."

4.Rental Capacity & Duration: The maximum capacity is four people. Check in time is 12:00 PM; checkout is 12:00 PM. Rental is for 1 day minimum and a 3 day maximum stay per year. This lookout rental has a key lock. Renter must obtain key from the McCloud Ranger Station during business hours, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. M-Sat, if this is not possible call (530) 964-2184, to make other arrangements.

5.Fire Restrictions: Renter can obtain a free California Campfire permit at any Forest Service or California Dept of Forestry office. Smoking is prohibited within the lookout, smoke only in vehicles, or an area cleared of all flammable material. Fireworks are prohibited.

6.Pets:Pets are allowed. Pet owners must clean up after their pet.

7.Cautionary items:Sensitive plants exist on the cindercone on the south and west slopes below the lookout. Please do not drive on the lower access road. When walking, stay on the roads and watch for sensitive plant signs. Do not walk past the signs. The mountain top and area surrounding the lookout is open to the public. The renters have sole use of the lookout building itself. The gate can remain locked and day-use visitors can walk up to the lookout from the gate. At over 7,000 feet in elevation, nights get chilly, so pack accordingly. Rental lookout does not have running water, showers or cooking facilities. Lookout rental does not honor Golden Passports Discounts.

From McCloud travel east on Hwy 89 16 miles to Road 15 (the Harris Springs Rd). Turn left and travel on a paved road for approx. 4 1/2 miles on Road 15 to the 49 road (Powder Hill Road). Travel for approximately 28 miles northeast to the Medicine Lake area. From there, follow the road along the north side of Medicine Lake for approximately 4 miles to Little Mt. Hoffman. These last 4 miles are not paved and motor homes and vehicles pulling trailers are not recommended.
