he campground is next to entrance of the Sunset Crater Volcano and Wupatki National Monuments. The campground is dotted with Ponderosa pines and there is almost no understory. This is because of black volcanic "gravel" put down when the Sunset Volcano last erupted in AD 1250. The Wupatki National Monument consists of pueblo ruins that were occupied by Sinagua Indians from about 1100-1225 AD. This ground cover and the close proximity of the two National Monuments makes the campground a most interesting place to camp. Interpretive programs are provided on weekends during the summer. Firewood is available for a fee. There are pedestal grilles and fire rings at each camp site.
