Horatio Nelson Jackson was a physician and automobile pioneer. Horatio’s Drive: America’s First Road Trip is a 2003 documentary directed by Ken Burns. This comes to be the first cross-country automobile journey in the United States. It happened during the summer of 1903. The documentation mainly concentrates on Horatio Nelson Jackson and The Vermont, his car; along with his companion Sewall K. Crocker, his pet pitbull Bud.

In 1903, Americans considered automobiles for short trips only. Horatio Nelson Jackson thought in a different way. He even bet fifty dollars, a huge amount back then, to a man that he could drive an automobile across the country. He went on to pay a man to accompany him as he tried to go from California into Oregon and the Rocky Mountain states until they finally reach New York City. It made him a media sensation. While Jackson, the other man and a dog, manged to get across the nation, they had numerous setbacks including medical difficulties. After Jackson started, two other teams of drivers set out from San Francisco, aiming to be the first team to reach New York.
