Set in a wooded canyon east of Missoula at 4,100 feet , the Pattee Canyon Recreation Area has individual family picnic sites available for free along with 3 group picnic sites available by reservation. The picnic area sits in a shaded grove of Ponderosa pine. The loop roads are paved and the group sites have accessible toilets and garbage receptacles. A host is on duty in the summer. Pattee Canyon Picnic Area is open from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. when the host is on site. The picnic area is generally open from May 1st to September 30th. When the picnic area gates are closed people are welcome to park outside and walk in. The Pattee Canyon Recreation Area is a popular spot for day hikes, mountain biking and picnicking.

From I-90 Orange Street Exit, travel south on Orange Street. Turn left onto West Front street and go 0.2 miles to South Higgins Ave, turn right. Continue on South Higgins Ave. approximately 2.7 miles to Pattee Canyon road, turn left. Once on Pattee Canyon Road, travel 4 miles east heading up the canyon. The picnic area is located on the left side of the road.Look for the Pattee Canyon Picnic Area sign and entrance gates
