Glory Hole Recreation Area is located at New Melones Lake. New Melones Lake, the fifth largest lake in California, is located on the Stanislaus River. The 12,500 surface acre lake is situated along the edge of the Mother Lode, the rich gold vein that prompted the 1849 California Gold Rush. At 1,100 feet above sea level, the diverse and resource abundant Foothill Oak Woodlands hug the 100 miles of shoreline.
Land-based activities include wildlife viewing, rock climbing, hiking, biking, horseback riding, and picknicking. Fishing, boating, water skiing, wake boarding, jet skiing, sailing, swimming, kayaking and canoeing are enjoyed at this large, yet uncrowded lake.
Facilities at the Glory Recreation Area include a full-service marina, amphitheater, playground, horseshoe pits, 25 miles of hiking and biking trails, campgrounds, day-use areas, multi-lane launch ramp, and a fish cleaning station.
Surrounding communities are popular vacation and retirement destinations and provide necessary services and shopping opportunities. Golfing, snow skiing, river rafting, commercial caves, historical railroad and Native American museums are close by. Year-round interpretive events, a museum highlighting natural and cultural resources, as well as general information and directions are available at the New Melones Lake Visitor Center, located on Highway 49, midway between Sonora and Angels Camp.
