ELKMONT GROUP CAMP (TN)
Description
Elkmont Campground is the largest campground in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It is the closest campground to Gatlinburg, Tennessee. The beautiful Little River runs directly through the center of the campground and is just a short distance from the group sites.
There are several great hiking trails within minutes of the campground, including the popular Laurel Falls Trail. Little River is also an excellent trout fishing stream. Elkmont is known for its historical and cultural significance as a former logging community and summer resort getaway.
The camp store offers limited supplies but virtually all amenities, including a medical clinic, can be found in Gatlinburg, 8 miles away.
As a result of funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 , the restroom in the Elkmont Group campground will be rehabilitated in 2010 to conform to ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) standards. Due to the distance to other restrooms, the entire group camp will remain closed while rehab work is underway. The group camp opening date will therefore be delayed until April 10, 2010.
We apologize for any inconvenience while these improvements are made. Please check back for scheduling updates.
Between April 29 and August 31, 2010, Elkmont campers will experience noise and smells related to construction on the Little River and Jakes Creek trailheads and repaving of the access road. Loud noises should be limited to daylight hours but there will be some noise at other times. Smells, such as vehicle exhaust and asphalt, may be experienced at any time. Access to the Little River and Jakes Creek trails will be very limited after July 6, 2010. For more details, check the website www.nps.gov/grsm.
