The Cold Springs Peak Cabin is a primitive log cabin that was originally constructed in 1931 to shelter firefighters and other work crews. It was last used for firefighters in 1953. In 1989, forest Service employees shored up the cabin's foundation, re-shingled its roof, and installed a stove. Today, the 12'x14' cabin qualifies for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. Cold Springs Peak Cabin sits on a mountain. Nearly vertical cliffs rise to the east, practically to its doorstep. Visitors will enjoy breathtaking views of the Bitterroot Mountains, and you can fish at several lakes located within an hour's hike from the cabin. Many trails in the area offer plenty of hiking opportunities.

From Missoula Montana, drive to the Greer, Idaho. Follow State Highway 11 to Weippe. Continue on toward Pierce. Turn right onto French Mountain Road 250. Follow road 250, paved for 20 miles, gravel thereafter, to North Fork Clearwater River. Turn right on road 247. Continue to the junction with Mush Saddle Road 711. Turn left. Drive two miles to the junction with Cool Creek Road 5295 and turn right. You're now on a single- lane, dirt-surface road rarely graded or cleared, slippers when wet. You'll climb steeply to the junction with road 5295A. Make a sharp turn right. Two miles later park and follow Flat Mountain Trail 176 for two miles to the cabin. (Experience motorbike and ATV drivers can travel Trail 176.) About one mile in Elizabeth Mountain trial 445 forks to the right. Stay left. About one-quarter mile before you get to the cabin, Pot Mountain trail 169 forks left. Stay right. You can take trail 169 to the cabin. Begin at Mush Saddle along road 711. Go nearly four miles then turn left at the trail 176 junction and continue one-quarter mile to the cabin. Motor bikers will find trail 169 difficult; it's impassable for ATVs. From Lewiston, ID, follow US highway 12 east to Greer, Idaho. Turn left onto highway 11 and proceed as described above. It may be useful to contact the district at (208) 476-4541. Maps of the area are available at all Clearwater National forest offices for $7.
